Is your mood constantly changing, or feeling out of control? Mood tracking can be a way to better understand your emotions and the different aspects of your life that are impacting your mental health.

What is Mood Tracking?
Mood tracking involves recording your mood on a regular basis. This may be tracking mood for day/night or once a day. You can use mood tracking templates, apps on your phone, or journaling.

How is Mood Tracking Helpful?
Even after only a few weeks of mood tracking you will have data that is helpful when navigating your mental health. You can use that data to determine the…

  • Patterns– that occur with your mood. Some people may notice that in the morning their mood is typically down but by the end of the day their mood has changed. By learning these patterns, you can gain a better understanding of how your mood fluctuates and can incorporate methods of coping more effectively.
  • Areas–of your life that impact mood. Sleep, eating habits, work, school, the people we surround ourselves with, etc. all impact our mood. Mood tracking provides data about our mood in relation to what is happening that day and can provide direction to how you may want to modify these areas of your life.
  • Positive factors–that influence your mood. Your mood may be different on the days that you exercise, spend time with friends, or work on your hobbies. This could provide reassurance of the helpful impact of self-care over time.
