There is plenty of research that demonstrates the benefits of mindfulness and meditation, so you might hear your friends or therapist suggest mindfulness or meditation to you.
When we think of mindfulness or meditation, we often think of sitting in silence for 30 minutes with our eyes closed, deep breathing. The problem is… that doesn’t work for everyone!
If you can’t get into meditation, there are other options to practice mindfulness.
Try these other mindfulness activities:
- Use an adult coloring book
- Try active meditation, like mindful swimming, walking, or running. Focus on one thing while you exercise, such as the feeling of your feet hitting the ground or your arms swinging back and forth.
- Yoga (YouTube has a lot of free, guided yoga sessions)
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation
- Do a Mindfulness Body Scan
- Journaling (see our blog for journaling prompts)
- Listen to a guided meditation as you fall asleep
