Oftentimes when we experience a distressing emotion, our brain directly goes into problem-solving that emotion. It creates a story or narrative that addresses the emotion. This oftentimes leads to pushing the emotion away or even completely avoiding it.
Giving ourselves time to experience and feel our emotions can reduce the chance of us avoiding how we feel. Avoiding our emotions can lead to them continuing to stick around for longer and hangout in our life like a lingering dark cloud. Emotions are meant to clue us into aspects of ourself or our life that we need to pay attention to.
