Attachment Style tends to be a buzzword when people talk about intimacy, communication, and boundaries in their relationship. Research on adult attachment suggests that the same system that evokes the emotional bond between parents and their children accounts for the bond that evolves between adults in intimate relationships.

Knowing more about your attachment style can be helpful when responding to others and understanding what you need in your relationships.

Can we change our attachment style?

Yes, a person’s attachment style can change over a period of time. Change can typically occur when you are in a relationship that challenges your beliefs about intimacy and love. Over time, you will adapt new beliefs centered around reassurance from your partner.

However, you do not have to feel pressured to work on changing your attachment style. It may be helpful to view attachment styles as a tool to identify what each person needs in their relationships.

Working with a therapist can be helpful when exploring your attachment style and interpersonal relationships by giving a well-rounded view of all factors contributing to how you may be responding to others including your attachment style.
