October is ADHD Awareness month!
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children and adults. ADHD impacts executive functioning skills, which includes attention, concentration, memory, motivation, impulsivity, hyperactivity, organization, and social skills.
ADHD symptoms go far beyond what the eye can see.
On the surface, ADHD might look like trouble concentrating and fidgeting. Below the surface, ADHD can cause other issues like relationship challenges, poor time management skills, emotional dysregulation, and forgetting to take care of basic needs.
ADHD and Gender
ADHD tends to present differently in women and may present differently in other genders as well*.
Men and boys are more likely to present with externalized symptoms, such as:
- Disruptive behavior
- Interrupting others
- Aggressive or impulsive behavior
- Physically overactive
Women and girls are more likely to have internalized symptoms, such as:
- Daydreaming or spacing out
- Easily losing focus
- Auditory processing issues
- Impatience
*We would like to acknowledge that there is a plethora of research on how ADHD presents and impacts cisgender men, however, there is limited research on how ADHD impacts other genders. While research on ADHD in women is increasing, unfortunately, research on Two-Spirit, transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, genderfluid, genderqueer, and agender is lacking. We recognize that there are more than two genders and symptoms of ADHD present differently for everyone.
Treatment Options for ADHD:
Behavioral Talk Therapy: Clients work with their therapist to develop skills to manage symptoms, improve social skills, reduce unwanted behaviors, and learn to manage emotions.
Medication Treatment: Medication can help improve focus and reduce hyperactivity. Medication could include stimulants, non-stimulants, and/or antidepressants.
The team at Ann Arbor Counseling Associates is equipped to evaluate and treat ADHD. To schedule an appointment, call us or fill out our form online.
