- First of all, what are Coping Skills?
- People use coping strategies (actions, sequence of actions, or ways of thinking about things) to feel relief from distress. We typically need coping skills in higher times of stress or dysregulated mood.
- Why might your current coping skills not be working as well anymore?
- Changes in life and environment. We naturally develop ways to cope throughout life, which are helpful at the time but may not be effective as our life changes.
- Increase in the amount of Stressors. Stressors in one’s environment may change and impact effectiveness of specific coping skills
- Not Resolving Core Issue. Coping skills aim to help with unpleasant feelings but they may not resolve the core of what is causing distress
